Best Long Island Towns for Families in 2026

By Nitin Gadura | Gadura Real Estate | Updated April 2026

Long Island is one of the top destinations for families leaving New York City in search of excellent schools, safe neighborhoods, and more living space. With hundreds of towns and villages across Nassau and Suffolk counties, choosing the right community can be overwhelming. I'm Nitin Gadura of Gadura Real Estate, and I help families identify the Long Island town that matches their priorities and budget.

Top-Tier School Districts (Premium Budget)

Jericho

The Jericho School District consistently ranks among the top 5 in New York State. Jericho High School boasts exceptionally high SAT scores, AP participation rates, and college placement. The town is popular with South Asian and East Asian families who prioritize academic excellence.

Syosset

Syosset Central School District is another academic powerhouse. The town offers a blend of established neighborhoods with mature trees and newer developments. Syosset has a vibrant downtown area along Jackson Avenue with restaurants and shops.

Garden City

Garden City is one of Long Island's most prestigious communities, designed by architect A.T. Stewart in the 1860s. The village has a charming downtown with upscale shopping on Franklin Avenue, beautiful tree-lined streets, and the Cathedral of the Incarnation as a landmark. Schools are excellent across all levels.

Strong Schools with More Affordable Prices

Bethpage

Bethpage offers a strong school district at a more accessible price point than neighboring Jericho or Syosset. The town has a quintessential Long Island suburban feel with well-maintained Cape Cods and colonials. Bethpage State Park provides a major recreation asset.

Massapequa

The Massapequa School District serves a family-focused South Shore community. The town has a charming downtown along Broadway, proximity to the water, and access to multiple parks and preserves. Massapequa Park and North Massapequa offer slightly different price points within the same school district.

Hicksville

Hicksville offers solid schools, a growing Indian and South Asian community, and central Nassau County convenience. Broadway has become a hub for Indian restaurants and shops. The LIRR station is a major junction point with frequent service.

Most Affordable Family-Friendly Towns

Valley Stream

Directly bordering Queens, Valley Stream gives families the Long Island suburban experience at near-city prices. The town has its own LIRR station, proximity to Green Acres Mall, and a mix of Cape Cods, ranches, and colonials.

Levittown

America's most famous planned community still offers excellent family value. The original Cape Cod homes have been expanded and updated over decades, and the community has strong schools, active civic associations, and a central location.
